Literacy Bridge Update
December 13, 2011
The last several months of 2011 saw a whirlwind of activities for 2010 Integral Fellows Award winner, Cliff Schmidt. In September, Schmidt was in New York City at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) to introduce Literacy Bridge to a worldwide audience of government, business and non-profit leaders, including President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and actress/activist Geena Davis – all who expressed strong interest in Literacy Bridge’s work.
Shortly after the CGI annual meeting, Schmidt left for Ghana to kick off Literacy Bridge’s CGI commitment, a maternal and child health program which is designed to reduce preventable maternal mortality and child deaths and improve the health of 24,000 women and at-risk children in 75 low-literate communities across rural Ghana.
Following his returned from Ghana in October, Schmidt was interviewed by the BBC Radio. He also presented the published results of Literacy Bridge’s Talking Book agriculture pilot study at the IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference in Seattle WA, and spoke at Global Washington as a member of a plenary panel highlighting examples of innovative partnerships.
The highlight for Schmidt in November was speaking at the MSAF 2011 Integral Fellows Award celebration. More than 500 guests learned from Schmidt about Literacy Bridge’s work over the past year and the impact of Literacy Bridge’s Talking Book on illiterate populations living in some of the most inaccessible regions in the world.
